Flight Insurance – What You Need to Fly with Peace of Mind

There are several different types of flight insurance.  Flight insurance can cover various “points of failure”, such as canceled flights and flight accidents.  Most forms of flight insurance also cover such horrific events such as death and injury caused during flights, or anytime on-board a plane.

Not everyone needs flight insurance.  If you purchase travel insurance you probably will already be covered for flight cancellation or travel delays.  If you don’t purchase separate travel insurance, flight insurance is an inexpensive option to help cover costs associated with delayed or canceled flights.

Among the primary reasons for purchasing flight insurance is to provide protection in the event of an accident.  Traveling by plane is far safer than traveling by car, but when a plane does crash casualties are usually very high and injuries are abundant.  Flight insurance can be purchased to pay out based upon loss of limbs or loss of life.   This form of flight insurance is known as Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D). If you already have a large life insurance policy then you may be more interested in insurance for dismemberment.  If you do have health and life insurance check to see if any of those would pay for dismemberment prior to purchasing flight insurance.

The other primary reason to purchase flight insurance is to provide financial protection against flight cancellation or flight interruption.  This form of flight insurance can help you recover the cost of your flight if you have to cancel due to sickness, job loss or death of a family member.  This type of insurance will also reimburse travel costs associated with missed connecting flights and flight cancellations. Some flight insurance will cover medical expenses as well as lost baggage and baggage delay.

Other forms of flight insurance cross over into areas similar to other forms of travel insurance.  These could include health care if you are injured or become sick abroad.  If you already have health insurance, and you know it will cover you when you travel then you should not pay extra for this coverage.

Flight insurance is an inexpensive option to help you find peace of mind during your travels.  It is recommended that you check your current health, life and other forms of insurance before spending money on flight insurance.  If you don’t have life insurance, then flight insurance is a VERY inexpensive life insurance policy, but remember that it only will pay if you are injured or killed while on a plane.
